Mind- Controversial entity of Brain! - Annu Biswas

Mind has always been at the controversy when it comes to be associated with the Brain. Pondering about this issue, let us connect the two.

Introduction

As I write these words today, I have in my memory, ideas of all those scientific findings, that over the years scientists have discovered about human brain. Also some excellent and pioneering theories of mind have been theorized lately in the field of psychology.

Some would point out, that I am going into the mind and body controversy. But no! In ages of ultra scientific technology and advancement, our curiosity should not revolve around controversies!

Interpretation of Mind-Brain facts

There is no question that something like the invisible mind is taking our time to be understood. So, the probability that it exists is quite high. Everything that humans have speculated on a scientific footing, has come out to be true, one or the other day. Be it gravity, energy, mass, black hole, or center of the Earth, we acknowledge their existence. Then why not accept Mind?

We should be interested to connect the two, and find out if we can succeed in making them one. Lets us attempt that as we read further. There are neural mechanisms in brain which are getting active with each letter of each word. Then there are other brain areas which help to see and correct spellings while typing these words. Other brain wiring make fingers move and dance on the keyboard and obey command to type each letter correctly. Yet again, another neural mechanism corrects grammatical mistakes!

Yet the fact cannot be looked over, that these rules have not been learnt by neural circuits all automatically. Rather, a conscious human being learns to recognize, memorize and use all the cognitive functions of the brain. These rules were learnt with constant practice, determination and will.

The point is, that brain is there with all the power and capabilities. It is indeed a super powerful nature-made machine! But if we have to say how it works, consider consciousness. Being healthily alive is the function of brain, which we call mind. As long as brain is alive, it has this conscious living and experiencing mind. Mind makes it alive and directs it, challenges and channels it to learn and act.

Mind-brain Concluded together

Great neurologist, Sigmund Freud despite being a physician, acknowledged the presence of an entity, that he called- The Mind. Mind- Psyche- Soul, whatever we call it, is the superpower of the brain that derives all its activities. It is not localized in a particular area, like the frontal lobe of the brain, where major cognitive functions take place, rather it is the entire brain, which feels, sees, hears, judges, pledges, experiences, decides, practices, memorizes, forgets, learns and what not.

Consider those who are unfortunate enough to have been born with neuro- developmental disorders like intellectual disability. We know that it’s a brain deficit, and their brain never grows in a way to help them have that equivalent free will, determination and ability to indulge in practice for learning even simple tasks like self care which healthy people learn easily with increasing age. Hath mind been a separate entity, and we consider Freud’s theory of mind to be true, would mind not have made these unfortunate people to at least grasp activities necessary for self sustenance? In conclusion we reach at the point that, since the brain never develops fully, mind remains underdeveloped too. But bear in mind! Mind is not non-existent, otherwise, the above analogy and Freud’s theory altogether would lose meaning!

This leaves us

This leaves us with some questions again. Is the phenomenon which we call as mind; is the other name of life? Mind that humans sometimes think they possess and at other times they question and doubt about, is existent or is it just an assumption that it exists? Life exists.
